4.6 Summary

The motivation for tuning regulators is that of the classical techniques used to tune PID controllers. The idea was formalized in [2] in the centralized setting, and then extended to the decentralized setting in [3]; in both cases, the goal is to track reference signals (and reject disturbance signals) which are described by a finite sum of sinusoids of known frequency. This idea turned out to be quite useful for a variety of applications, including in the control of distillation columns [1], temperature control of buildings [5], heat exchangers [4], load and power frequency control [6], and microgrids [7, 8], to list but a few. The centralized approach has been extended in a variety of ways, including (i)the design of PI controllers [13], where it is used to control a concentration-flow process,
